May 31, 2006: Building Sustainable Business Opportunities

Companies face a challenge in learning to prosper in a global economy: with limited resources, energy challenges, global environmental stress, growing widespread poverty and, what author Tom Friedman has dubbed a “flat world”. What do we in Ohio need to do to posture ourselves for these challenges? The private sector is key to solving the earth’s greatest challenges and there is a major market opportunity for companies willing to think globally, collaborate, innovate, and reach to the “base of the pyramid”, where two-thirds of the world’s population live on $2 a day. Leadership, technology, and corporate social responsibility are our key tools. One of the best examples is right here in the Cuyahoga Valley. New thinking took the bankrupt LTV facility and turned it around to where it is highly profitable, a good employer, a good corporate citizen, and a major component of the largest steel company in the world.
